How Much Does a Dental Cleaning Cost? Real Prices and Options

It's the most common question before a first visit: how much is the cleaning going to cost me? The answer depends on which kind of cleaning your mouth actually needs — and that difference confuses a lot of patients. Here's the honest breakdown.

The two kinds of cleaning (and why prices vary so much)

Regular cleaning (prophylaxis). This is the maintenance cleaning for healthy gums: plaque and tartar removed above the gumline, teeth polished. Nationally it typically runs $75–$200 without insurance. With most PPO plans, preventive cleanings — usually two per year — are covered at 100%.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). When tartar builds up below the gumline and there are signs of gum disease, a regular cleaning no longer does the job. A deep cleaning is done with anesthetic, section by section, and nationally costs $150–$350 per quadrant. Most insurance plans cover part of it when the diagnosis supports it.

How do I know which one I need?

You can't know over the phone — and be skeptical of anyone who tells you without examining you. At your exam, Dr. Jaquez measures your gum pockets (those numbers you hear called out: "three, two, four…"). Healthy gums mean a regular cleaning is enough. If the measurements show periodontal pockets, she'll show you the numbers, explain why, and put the price in writing before anything is scheduled.

What if I don't have insurance?

You don't need insurance to keep your mouth healthy. Ask about our Wellness Plan — exams, cleanings, and X-rays for one predictable membership price. We also accept CareCredit, which splits larger treatment costs into monthly payments.

The expensive option is waiting

A postponed cleaning doesn't stay the same: tartar keeps building, gums inflame, and what would have been a prophylaxis becomes a deep cleaning — or something more. The "expensive" maintenance visit is always cheaper than the treatment that replaces it.
